2010 Business Presentation Survey – The Results Now Available Online

It’s been a busy few weeks here at Eyeful Towers

We spent a fair amount of time reviewing, crunching and analysing the numbers from the 2010 Business Presentation Survey…and then pulling together a webinar to explain to the hundreds of interested parties on quite what the results meant.

We’ve launched a dedicated CPD Presentations service

We get involved in all manner of presentation projects.

From the high octane big pitch presentations (normally in conjunction with our partners, Sales Engine) through to slides for speaking engagements for authors and the like  (we’re in the thick of a project for a woman who climbed Everest at the age of 22…amazing story but more on that at a later date).

One particular type of presentation that seems to get our customers in a fluster is that of the CPD or Continuing Professional Development presentation.  There’s no getting away from it – these presentations are fraught with complexity and pitfalls.

But why?

The answer is pretty straightforward.  A CPD presentation needs to tread a very fine line:

It needs to be independent enough to satisfy the CPD assessors (they don’t want the CPD process to be a thinly veiled sales exercise) BUT have enough commercial content to keep the marketing department of the Provider happy (after all, it costs money to send people out to deliver these presentations!).  On top of all this, it needs to grab the attention of the audience who may just be there to pick up their CPD points and grab a free sandwich.

Like we say, it can get very complex…

The good news is that we’ve got ourselves a bit of a reputation for getting the balance just right with clients like Corus, Rockfon, SIG and Altro now equipping their CPD specialists with top notch presentations.

So pleased are we with the way things have panned out over the last couple of years that we’ve created a dedicated service just for CPD presentations.

We believe we’re the only company out there with a dedicated CPD specialist (the aforementioned vagaries of CPD presentations mean that this is pretty much a must in our opinion).  He’s called Roy and he’s very very good.

Repurposing PowerPoint – We May Have Mentioned This Once Or Twice…

If you’re a regular reader of the Eyeful Blog, you’ll be aware that we get very animated (excuse the pun) when it comes to getting the most out of your PowerPoint.

Panic not! 

This is not some clumsy, heavy-handed way of selling our wares.  If you’re a regular here, you’ll know all about the wonders of Presentation Optimisation, the glowing testimonials of our ever-growing customer base and the magic we can weave with the most basic of presentations.  Let’s not get into that now…

Nope – we’re talking about Repurposing PowerPoint.  Taking the hard work you’ve put into creating your masterpiece in PowerPoint and repackaging it for other mediums. 

From PowerPoint to Podcast…to video…to interactive PDF…and finally to web presentation.  The choice is yours.

Toy Story in 3D, the BBC’s Mark Kermode and PowerPoint Animation

We think the Beeb’s film critic Mark Kermode is rather marvellous.  We like his pithy, insightful and downright passionate reviews.  He seems like our sort of bloke.

We also think Pixar are nothing short of brilliant.  Wonderful films with compelling storylines, engaging characters and eye-popping animation techniques.

So what links these two with your corporate presentationAnimation.

Mark has got himself hot under the collar about the growing trend of 3D cinema for a while now.  He’s sick of having aliens, cars and body parts “flying” out of the screen just because the technology allows.

We tend to agree with him.

It’s a bit like using every PowerPoint animation and transition available to you (even more in PowerPoint 2010!) on your slides.  Yes – it’s clever technology but frankly it’s distracting and not helping you tell your story.

Now onto Pixar’s Toy Story 3.  Mark loves this film for many reasons but the key one for us is that he didn’t notice the 3D.

It was there but did all the right things – helped the story along, engaged the audience and supported the characters.  But at no point did it detract by being used inappropriately simply because they had the technology to hand.

To paraphrase Mark, technology should enhance not detract.

And if the audience are so engaged with the whole experience that they don’t even notice the technology, pat yourself on the back.  Job done.

The 10 Second Slide Rule (& the Secret of Getting in Sync)

Here’s an idea we’ve adapted from a man we admire at Eyeful – Seth Godin (something of a bald-headed genius).

Next time you have to prepare a presentation try this – put together a slide deck that has a slide for every 10 seconds.

Sounds tough, I know, but try it. 

Think how little each slide can have on it – maybe one picture or one idea. Instead of 4 bullet points a slide could only have 1.

StopwatchNow if you take this to it’s logical conclusion, you’ll have a 180 slides for a 30 minute presentation.  Each slide designed to share information, move your story along or simply underpin your message. 

That’s a lot of slides, a lot of content…and huge opportunity to mess up. 

If the presenter and their slides are not in sync, chaos reigns and the only message delivered is that the babbling madman on stage doesn’t have a clue what they’re talking about!

OK, so the concept of a 10 second slide isn’t really that practical but it does highlight the need to have an enormous amount of synergy between your talk and the slides.

And by synergy WE DO NOT MEAN READING THE SLIDES (sorry to shout but we find that rather upsetting) – we mean working in tandem with the slide deck to support and punctuate your message. 

Get this right and PowerPoint magically transforms from a teleprompter into an effective presentation aid.

Get in sync with your slide deck – your audience will be forever grateful…and it may save you a few grey hairs along the way.

Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun?

It seems like only yesterday that we celebrated our 5th Birthday…in reality it was back in October.

It doesn’t seem like 5 minutes ago since we moved to our fancy new offices, Eyeful Towers…in reality, it was back in April.

And it feels like we’ve just started working with the good people at Peak Software…in reality, it’s been over 3 years.

As with any relationship, we’ve worked hard to keep it fresh by offering new ideas and maintaining an enthusiasm for each new project.

Charles Mingus – Jazz legend or presentation guru?

The late great Charles Mingus was not just an amazing jazz musician (cue obligatory finger click), he was also a wise man.

We could leave this blog there – this single line sums up our approach to building slides rather nicely.  However, let’s embellish this idea slightly:

When you are putting together a slide within a presentation (having done a storyboard first naturally…) think about how you can best get across the information to your audience and invariably the best way is the simplest way.

Take for example trying to describe the offside rule in football (who says we’re not topical). There are many, many ways to describe this rule particularly taking into account some of the changes over the years but in essence it boils down to 3 key things happening:

  1. To be offside a player must be in the opposition’s half
  2. There must be fewer than 2 people from the other team between the player and the goal
  3. The person must be in front of the ball to be offside

We’re naturally ignoring passive, active and all that for the purposes of this demonstration, but how best could you describe this with a PowerPoint slide(s)?

It could be that you simply list those 3 points although people will read it before you can talk through it – but simplest would probably be 3 simple pictures demonstrating those 3 actions.  On the other hand, there are at least 100 ways (and we’ve counted them) that you could describe this and leave even the most ardent football fan bemused.

But back to our man Mingus and his visionary quote.

It’s interesting to note that Mingus was a pioneer of his craft and his example parallels nicely with presenting. If you present complicated areas simply and get people to understand them (without being condescending) then you have created a powerful connection.

Don’t waste your opportunity to make a connection by over-complicating your message.

For those of you who like a challenge then do send in your best PowerPoint interpretation of the offside rule – the best one gets some a PowerPoint Amnesty Action Pack!

Nice people saying nice things – Rockfon

For a number of years, we’ve built a strong relationship with the fine people at RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and have had the honour of speaking at a number of their events.

Among many things, this relationship has given us an insight into that most understated of beasts, the CPD Presentation. 

Now officially CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development although over the past few years we fear that it’s also become shorthand for dull, uninspired and downright depressing PowerPoint presentations!

Rockfon framedThankfully we’ve been called in to work with a number of CPD Providers to improve the impact and accessibility of their presentations. 

These are always interesting and quite technical projects – as a result, we now know a huge amount about rolled steel, flooring legislation and sanitary ware to name just a few.  As you can imagine, we make for very interesting dinner party guests…

The latest in a long line of successful CPD presentation projects is for Rockfon, the people behind stone wool insulation.

A day in the life of… The Presentation Consultant

Welcome to the second blog taking a closer look at the team here at Eyeful. Having cast our eye over our Project Manager and their highly organised and efficient ways, this time it’s the turn of the Presentation Consultant

As an integral part of our Presentation Optimisation methodology, the role of Presentation Consultant is biggie here at Eyeful.

As the name suggests, our Consultants are actually here to help our customers by understanding what they need and helping to shape the way we deliver it.  Here’s Jo to tell us about an exciting 24 hours:

Jo - FramedI’m rolling out the clichés early here, I know, but no two days are ever really the same both because of the role I do as Consultant but also because of the way we work here at Eyeful. I’ll try, however, to take you through a “typical” day!

Most of my days are spent out and about on site with clients – but in an effort to remain as sheep-like as the rest of them, I start my day with a check through my Blackberry.

As I tend to deal with a number of customers at any one time the early part of the morning will normally involve talking to a good few before I get onsite.

Picking up on any work that needs to be fed back to the studio or speaking to a client who has something urgent can quite often take up the time before beginning a client engagement for the day – and I’ll normally have spoken to one or all of our Project Managers back in the office before 9am!

Once onsite, I really get into making a difference.  It’s the time spent talking to customers and helping take their ideas and shape them into something that will become really impressive that’s gets me up in the morning.

A lot of my time is spent storyboarding with people – something I know we bang on about at Eyeful but I can’t emphasise how important it is. No story can be properly told unless you understand it first.

Jo Meeting - FramedA lot of my days are spent solely on site with our customers – but some afternoons I get the opportunity to be in the office (joy for me, although the office might not agree).

This always gives me a chance to get some time with our Project Managers and designers and to see the real work getting done for our clients!

Whilst every day might be different – most days end with any number of calls from clients and colleagues alike and more often than not one from Simon himself who got himself thoroughly overexcited about a new client or an extra innovative design the studio has produced.

One thing is for sure – Eyeful and it’s customers don’t allow for dull days!

Presentation Integrity is next to Godliness

Sometimes the integrity of your presentation is important.

Sometimes you want to know a little more – if it’s been opened, if it’s been forwarded on and particularly if it’s been changed.

Sometimes your business requires you go a little bit big brother (we’re thinking George Orwell here – not Davina McCall).

There are indeed times when a presentation needs to remain exactly as God, or maybe just yourself, intended. We’ve banged on in the past about presentation creep – when over the course of time a presentation undergoes a myriad of small changes – and ultimately becomes nothing like the original presentation and carries none of the original message.

Data Integrity - CheckBut in some cases even the smallest changes can have an enormous impact. Some Eyeful clients have this problem, taking the pharmaceutical industry and the financial industry as particular examples, and they have to be able to guarantee the accuracy of their slides.

Here at Eyeful we like to be able to offer our clients what they need so we’ve partnered with a cutting edge company in data security, InDorse Technologies www.indorse-tech.com.

By using their technology we can now provide our clients with the ability to not only prevent presentation creep but also to know whenever a presentation has been opened, changed, forwarded or basically even breathed on (OK the last one isn’t quite true) but hopefully you get the picture.

For some organisations they have to compliance with regulations or show due diligence with certain information and data and make sure that whether intentionally or accidentally – that data does not get tampered with, by using this new offering they can now rest easy.
